Will Passos

Will Passos - one of the founding members of the Soggy Wombats crew — is a Brazilian-born, Melbourne-based cave diver and the team's photogrammetry specialist.

Will experimented with DSLR, action and 360 cameras is a custom made rig fitted with multiple lights to scan cave walls and tunnels turning the resulting tens of thousands of stills into millimetre-accurate 3D models using Agisoft Metashape. These models are sharp enough to pick out individual colour bands in the clay formations he explores.

His best-known project is Pines Cave, near Tantanoola in South Australia. This project not only produced a full 3D model but helped the team spot and confirm a previously undiscovered tunnel extension. He carried the same technique through other caves in the region and most recently completed a full scan of Engelbrecht Cave, in the heart of Mount Gambier - work now published so the public can see how the cave system runs beneath the town's own streets.

Alongside teammates like Josh Richards, Will keeps pushing into new tunnels and updating the group's regional maps. He is currently focusing on international projects and collaborations. Recent expedition to Japan and collaborations in South Sulawesi and Laos as part of a broader ambition to map unexplored caves across Asia. Will is part of the Bottomline Projects Australia Chapter.
